Monitors buying guide

Two monitors with the same resolution and size can be completely different tools once you factor in panel type, real image quality, refresh performance and how well they handle HDR. Our monitor comparisons score panel, image quality, performance, HDR, connectivity and ergonomics together, so you can match a display to whether you're gaming, doing colour-critical work, or just want a comfortable all-day screen.

What matters most when comparing monitors

Panel and image quality

Panel type (IPS, VA, OLED and variants) drives contrast, viewing angles and colour more than resolution does. This is the single biggest differentiator between two otherwise-identical spec sheets.

Performance

Refresh rate and response time decide whether a monitor is smooth for gaming and fast motion, or just fine for static desktop work — a critical split depending on how you use it.

HDR

As with TVs, HDR support means little without the brightness and dimming to back it. We score HDR performance separately so a marketing badge doesn't inflate the picture.

Connectivity and ergonomics

Port selection, and the stand's height/tilt/rotation range, shape how well the monitor fits a real desk and multi-device setup.

Common questions

Is refresh rate or resolution more important?
It depends on use. Gamers benefit most from high refresh rates; colour and detail work benefit more from resolution and panel quality. Our comparisons score both so you can weigh them for your own needs.
Does HDR support mean good HDR on a monitor?
Often not — many monitors accept HDR but lack the brightness and local dimming to display it meaningfully. That's why we score HDR performance as its own section rather than treating support as a checkbox.
How often is monitor comparison data updated?
Specs and scores are reviewed as new models are added and pricing changes; each comparison page shows when its underlying data was last touched.
