Camera marketing loves megapixels, but the spec that shapes your images most is sensor size. It drives low-light performance, how much you can blur a background, and even how the autofocus behaves. Here's why it matters and what the trade-offs are.
A larger sensor has more surface area exposed to light, so it captures more photons — and more photons mean more signal, even in low light. That's the core reason full-frame cameras pull cleaner images out of a dim room than a smaller sensor at the same megapixel count: it's not about more pixels, it's about bigger ones gathering more light.
The same physics gives big sensors their shallow depth of field — the narrow band of sharp focus that produces creamy background blur. That look is prized for portraits, but it also narrows the in-focus range, which can make autofocus harder to nail.
In-body image stabilisation (IBIS) shifts the sensor itself to counter hand shake, and crucially it works with any lens you mount. It typically buys somewhere between two and four stops of hand-holding — some camera-and-lens combinations claim up to around eight — which means sharper handheld shots in low light and smoother handheld video. It's one of the highest-value features to look for if you shoot without a tripod.
Two focusing methods underpin modern cameras. Contrast-detection is accurate but slow; phase-detection is much faster, able to lock in a fraction of a second. That's why today's cameras use hybrid systems that combine both, layering on subject recognition that tracks eyes and faces across the frame. If you photograph anything that moves — kids, pets, sport — a proven phase-detection hybrid AF system matters more than almost any other spec.
