Two monitors with identical resolution and refresh rate can look and feel completely different because of one spec buried on the box: the panel type. IPS, VA, TN and OLED each trade colour, contrast and speed differently. Here's what separates them and how to read the numbers honestly.
TN panels are the oldest LCD type — very fast, with low response times, but the weakest colour and viewing angles. IPS panels offer some of the best colour reproduction and wide, stable viewing angles, which is why they dominate all-round and creative monitors. VA panels sit in between with the highest LCD contrast — commonly in the 3000:1 to 5000:1 range — for deeper blacks, at the cost of slower pixels. OLED brings per-pixel light for deep, pure blacks and extremely fast response (around 0.2–3 ms), with the one drawback being the potential for burn-in.
Response time measures how fast a pixel changes shade, and slow transitions cause visible motion blur around moving objects, which is unacceptable for fast content and gaming. The industry usually quotes a grey-to-grey figure based on a VESA standard measured between the 10% and 90% points of the transition curve — but manufacturers pick the best-case number. A fast headline response on a slow panel can still smear, so trust independent grey-to-grey measurements over the box figure.
Most monitors now support adaptive sync — AMD's FreeSync and the "G-Sync Compatible" ecosystem are both built on VESA's open Adaptive-Sync feature of DisplayPort. It lets the display's refresh rate track your GPU's frame rate to avoid tearing and reduce stutter. It's worth having and rarely costs extra now, so it should be a baseline expectation rather than a selling point.
