Size and resolution set the whole experience, so get those right first, then let refresh rate, HDR and ergonomics break the tie. Don't pay for 4K on a small screen or 240Hz you'll never push.

Panel technology sets the character. IPS gives accurate colour and wide viewing angles (the safe all-rounder); VA delivers deeper contrast for dark-room movies but slower pixels; OLED brings perfect blacks and near-instant response for gaming and HDR, at a higher price and with burn-in to manage. Size and distance matter too: the 28-inch class is the sweet spot for a desk, and beyond ~27 inches you'll want more resolution to keep text crisp.
Resolution only means something relative to size — it's pixel density (PPI) that decides how sharp text looks. 1440p hits the sweet spot on 27 inches; 4K earns its keep at 27–32 inches and for detailed creative work, and 57% of the monitors we track are 4K-or-higher. For colour work, look past resolution to gamut coverage (sRGB for web, DCI-P3 for video, Adobe RGB for print) and whether the panel is factory-calibrated. More pixels also cost GPU power in games, so don't buy 4K for a card that can't drive it.
For gaming, a high refresh rate is the single biggest feel upgrade — the jump from 60Hz to 120/144Hz is dramatic, and our catalogue median is now 165Hz. But refresh only helps if response time keeps up: a fast number on a slow panel still smears, so trust measured response (grey-to-grey) over the marketing figure. 87% of the monitors we track support adaptive sync (FreeSync/G-Sync) to kill tearing — worth having, and effectively standard now.
HDR is the most abused label on a monitor box. 100% of ours claim some HDR support, but "HDR10 compatible" on a 300-nit edge-lit panel looks no better than SDR. Real HDR needs high sustained brightness and local dimming (many dimming zones, or per-pixel on OLED). If HDR matters to you, look for a genuine spec — a meaningful DisplayHDR tier, high nits and lots of dimming zones — not just the logo.
Check the ports before the pixels. For high refresh at high resolution you'll want the right DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1 version — older ports cap what the panel can actually deliver. USB-C is the quiet game-changer: 64% of ours have it, and a single cable can carry video, data and laptop charging (check the power-delivery wattage). A built-in USB hub declutters a desk; built-in speakers are usually an afterthought.
The best panel on a bad stand is a daily annoyance. Look for height, tilt and swivel adjustment so the top of the screen sits at eye level; if the included stand is limited, check for a VESA mount so you can add an arm. A matte coating beats glossy under office lighting, and flicker-free backlighting plus a low-blue-light mode help on long days. None of this shows on a spec-score, but you live with it every hour.
